Earth Buildings and Their Repair

This is an interesting article by Dirk Bouwens.

"Most people associate buildings with earth walls with Africa, Arabia and South America. Yet, despite our damp climate, there are thousands of earth buildings in the United Kingdom, some of which are over four hundred years old. Each region (see map) tends to have its own form of construction dependent on the nature of the materials available locally. The principal forms of earth building include....": Read More.

Eco home: Organic paint

Read about Eco Paint in the Telegraph.
"Even if individuals are aware of the carcinogenic and neurotoxic potentials of paint, the alternative - an organic coating - is often viewed as inaccessible, awkward to use and much more expensive. But the reality is that organic paints are competitive in terms of price, ease of use, coverage and colour range. They are also sweeter smelling and unbeatable health-wise."  Read more

Supporting the local community pub.

Lime Earth Paints along with Coaton Decorators have come together with local volunteers to help a local community Pub, The Albion Hotel on Battersby Lane, Warrington. The Albion are renovating two of the main downstairs rooms following on from the recent renovation of their cosy "Reading Room".

The Albion is a listed building so is an ideal candidate for using the lime based paints from Lime Earth Paints. Lime washes are one of the oldest traditional paints. Made from putty lime, they're environmentally friendly, absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere to carbonate (harden), thus helping to reduce one of the greenhouse gases.

Stuart Furby from Lime Earth Paints of Warrington is supplying his specialist paints and also providing his time for Consultation, Training and Labour.
Stuart Furby, the founder of Lime Earth Paints trained in the use of traditional building materials as a stone conservator. He has worked under the guidance of many of the country's most prominent conservation architects on varied projects including cathedrals, vernacular buildings and even an art gallery. Although the Albion is one of the smaller projects he is worked on he says it is a worthwhile cause and is more than happy to help.

Painter and Decorator Dave Whittaker, owner of Coaton Decorators based in Warrington is also giving his time, services and helping apply the paints from Lime Earth Paints. Coaton are a team of Decorators have been providing a highly experienced and qualified service to commercial and private clients around the North West for many years.

Many of the Albion regulars are talented tradesmen and have generously given there time and skills. Other regulars and staff  have put in the hours and helped complete the renovation.
In return Mark, Gill and Kevin of the Albion have been more than happy to keep the work force fed and watered with the help of  the friendly bar staff serving the fine real ale to compliment the home cooked food from Debbie the head Chef.
The Albion has previously won Camra's Regional Pub of the year and Debbie's cooking has fans around the globe. Kevin and the team invited the large team of helpers and guests to a communal celebratory Sunday Lunch to show their thanks.

All involved have been happy to repay the Staff of the Albion for being a part of the community.

More Pictures will be posted on completion. (Pictures Provided by Jane Taylor)
